The workings behind the Degage Furniture Company
What is modern?
Twentieth-century style is characterized by the simplicity of form, absence of decorative ornament, and emphasis on functional concerns. The word "modern" has the literal meanings of "recent" or "current" and therefore came into use in discussion and criticism of art and design to describe developments of the early 20th century in which historicism and dependence on traditions were rejected in favor of directions that would relate to the social economic and technological realities of the "Machine Age"

Degage focuses on clean lines and creating a well-constructed object that inspires a meditative pause. Simplicity is of the essence. In one sweeping curve are two fundemental elements: the leg and back of a chair. An elongated ellipse sits low to the ground, basic geometry for the living room. Square and organic shapes are the working form. All textures are either neoclassical or faux finished. The eye is not disturbed.
Modern is our passion, and we work to recreate the deliberate, often playful elements of modernism. Modern never ceases to be new and exciting. Streamlined and pared-down, modern decorative elements contain a clarity that meshes with our contemporary aesthetic, though modern is almost 75 years old. Form and function are interlocked in the Degage design.
